NCCSJ - North Carolina Counselors for Social Justice

Mission

North Carolina Counselors for Social Justice recognize that barriers exist in our systems that oppress marginalized communities and privilege the majority. These systemic barriers impact clients, students, counselors, schools and communities. Activism is taking an active role in attempting to dismantle these systems of oppression. We believe relationships and community activism are effective interventions to address disparities. It is imperative for counselors to be involved in the political process, and to fiercely advocate for social justice in our profession, communities, and schools. Furthermore, we incorporate our activist identity into our roles as clinicians, educators, and researchers by building relationships within the schools and communities in which we work, addressing institutional and educational barriers, and teaching and producing research that addresses inequality and promotes social change.

Purpose

As a chapter of CSJ, we are committed to:

  • Help members build their professional identities as social justice advocates by practicing skills of advocacy
  • Present the latest research on social justice and advocacy
  • Create a forum for discussion on types of advocacy: individual, policy, collective, and others
  • Organize together to take action within your school or your broader community on matters of inequity and social change
  • Implement social justice by organizing activist events, keeping members updated through newsletters, social media posts, and listserv updates.
